What JiYi is

JiYi is a tag-based note-taking app that reduces note-taking to three things:

time + text + tag

You write ideas, work notes, to-dos and anniversaries against a date on a calendar, and simply attach a tag. The app then gathers everything with that tag automatically โ€” no folders, and no filing by hand.

Plain text only: no images, no voice, no file attachments.

Steps

  1. Download the APK from the download page onto your phone.
  2. Open it from your file manager. Android will warn you about installing unknown apps.
  3. In that prompt, tap Settings and allow your file manager to install unknown apps, then come back and continue.
  4. When it finishes, a JiYi icon appears on your home screen.
๐Ÿ’ก
The setting for "unknown sources" sits in a different place on every brand of phone. If you can't find it, search your system settings for "unknown apps" or "install unknown apps".

First run

You'll see an empty calendar with three tabs at the bottom: Calendar / Tags / Me.

  • Tap the + button in the bottom-right to write your first note.
  • After saving, a small dot appears under that date โ€” that's the "there's something here" marker.
  • The system tags (Idea / Work / To-do / Anniversary) already exist and can be used straight away.

Calendar (home)

Month view and dots

Days that have notes are marked with a dot underneath. Once a day has four or more notes, the dot is replaced by the count, so you can tell a busy day from a quiet one at a glance.

Day timeline

Tap a day and its timeline opens below, ordered by time and accurate to the minute. Each entry shows its tag pills; tapping one jumps to that tag.

Quick capture

The + button opens the capture sheet with the input already focused, so you can start typing immediately.

Inside the capture sheet you can:

  • tap existing tag pills, or create a new tag on the spot
  • type #tagname directly in the text, which becomes a tag on save
  • change the note's time to any past moment (back-dating)
  • pick that time by lunar date โ€” no need to look up the solar equivalent
โœจ
A #tag in the text is removed from the text once saved. So had an idea today #idea becomes had an idea today and carries the "Idea" tag โ€” the text stays clean without you deleting anything by hand.

Changing month

Swipe to change month; it snaps to a whole month when you let go. The "Today" button jumps back.

Lunar calendar

A small line under each date shows the lunar date, prioritised as:

lunar festival > solar term > public holiday > month name on the 1st > lunar day name

Lunar dates are computed locally โ€” no network, no new permissions.

Tags

Tag cards

Each tag is a card showing at most the five most recent notes. "View all" opens the tag detail page with every note under it.

Managing tags

ActionWhat it does
CreateName it and pick a colour
Rename / recolourSix colours to choose from
ReorderLong-press a card and drag to change the order
HideRemoved from the Tags page; the notes stay
MergeCombine two tags' notes into one, for when you realise they overlap
DeleteDeletes the tag only, not the notes; those notes become untagged
Retag one noteLong-press a note โ†’ "Edit tags" to tick or untick, or create a tag inline. Hidden tags already on the note remain visible and can be removed
โš ๏ธ
System tags (Idea / Work / To-do / Anniversary) can be renamed and recoloured but not deleted. That guarantees the tags with special behaviour always exist.

Me (settings)

"Me" has two halves: your profile at the top, app settings below.

  • Nickname and avatar โ€” eight presets, or choose a photo
  • Appearance โ€” theme (six) and light/dark
  • Reminders โ€” time for the daily writing reminder, off by default
  • Data โ€” data-related entries
  • Security and about โ€” privacy policy, changelog, feedback

To-dos and reminders

Making a to-do

Give a note the To-do tag and it gains to-do behaviour: tick it off, set a due time, set a reminder.

Completing and overdue

  • Ticking it off strikes through the text
  • Within the last 24 hours before the due time it turns amber
  • Past the due time it reads "N days overdue" and sorts to the top

Reminder lead times

5 minutes / 15 minutes / 30 minutes / 1 hour / 1 day ahead, defaulting to 30 minutes.

Repeating to-dos

Repeat options: none / daily / weekly (choose the days) / monthly / yearly, each with an optional repeat-until date.

๐Ÿ”
Completing a repeating to-do rolls it forward to the next period and keeps it in the list, rather than creating a new note, and tells you "this period is done, next one โ€ฆ". Your list doesn't fill up with duplicates.

Daily writing reminder

You can switch on a daily reminder and pick its time (off by default). Turning it on for the first time asks for notification permission.

๐Ÿ””
All reminders are re-registered automatically after restarting the app or the phone, so you never have to set them up twice.

Anniversaries

A note tagged Anniversary shows a status line beneath it:

day N ยท M days until the next one (the day itself counts as day 1)

Repeats can be "yearly (solar, 15 August)" or "yearly (lunar, 8th month day 15)". Lunar repeats are projected from the same lunar month and day; anyone born in a leap month falls back to the same-named regular month in years without one.

Reminder lead times: the day itself, 1 / 3 / 7 / 15 / 30 days ahead, or any custom 1โ€“365 days.

If you set the date via "Record time โ†’ lunar", the repeat rule is switched to the matching lunar repeat automatically, so you don't have to pick it twice.

Search lives in the top-right of the calendar page and looks through both tag names and note text, highlighting the matches.

  • A match on a tag name opens that tag directly
  • Results support swipe-to-delete like anywhere else

Deleting and undo

Notes can be deleted in four places: the timeline, a tag card, a tag detail page, and search results.

MethodHow
SwipeSwipe left on a note to reveal Delete
Long-pressA menu appears: delete the note, or mark a to-do done / not done

After deleting, an "Deleted ยท Undo" prompt appears at the bottom and stays for 3 seconds. Undo returns the note to its original position in time. The prompt disappears on its own after that, and deleting several notes in a row replaces the previous prompt rather than queueing them up.

Themes and personalisation

Six built-in themes, each with its own dark variant (not a simple inversion), freely combinable with light and dark for twelve combinations.

ThemeAccentCharacter
Mint (default)#3FBF9BFresh, quiet
Sky#4C9DF3Clean, rational
Lavender#9B7BF0Soft, imaginative
Amber#F0913FWarm, active
Sakura#F0739BGentle, everyday
Lime#7FB93FBright, energetic

Switching takes effect immediately, with no restart. A theme only changes interactive colours (buttons, switches, the selected date, the floating button) โ€” it never changes the system tag colours, otherwise the meaning of a colour would drift every time you switched.

Other options: week starts on Monday or Sunday, 12- or 24-hour clock, and a launcher icon that follows your launcher's shape (round, rounded square or square).

Privacy and data

This is the single most important design decision in JiYi: your data only exists on your phone.

  • The released build requests no network permission โ€” the app cannot go online
  • No account system, no sign-in
  • No analytics, tracking or advertising SDKs
  • Notes live in the app's private storage, unreadable by other apps
  • Uninstalling the app removes the data with it

The in-app privacy policy lists each permission the build actually requests, with its purpose, when it is asked for, and what happens if you decline.

Upgrades and changing phones

Upgrading

Install the new version straight over the old one. Notes, tags, themes and settings are all kept โ€” this is verified before every release.

Changing phones (important)

โš ๏ธ
v1.0.0 has no export or import yet. Before you move to a new phone, note that data currently lives on this device only; uninstalling or switching phones does not migrate it. This is on the list for a later release.

Troubleshooting

"App not installed" or "parsing error"

Usually an incomplete download. Download it again; if you opened it straight from a chat app, save it to local storage first and install from there.

Reminders don't arrive

  1. Check that notifications are allowed for JiYi in system settings
  2. Check battery saving or background restrictions โ€” some systems kill background reminders
  3. Open Me โ†’ Reminders and confirm the daily reminder is switched on

A note has disappeared

First check whether a hidden tag is filtering your view โ€” hiding a tag never deletes its notes. If it really was deleted, undo works within 3 seconds; after that you'll need to write it again.

What's the number under a date?

How many notes that day has. One to three notes show a dot; four or more show the number.

Can I sync to another phone?

No. JiYi has no cloud sync and isn't going to get one. That's the cost of privacy-first design, and also what makes it what it is.
